音楽研究部は1954年に音楽同好会としてスタート。
翌55年、音楽研究部に昇格し、文化総部に加入する。
設立目的はクラシックやフォークその他の音楽を研究し、論述することであった。
しかし、70年代のニューウェーブ・パンクムーブメント、80年代のヒップホップ・ハウスムーブメントを経るにつれ研究色は薄れ、演奏中心の部へと方向転換する。
伝統的にメインストリームから少し外れた音楽を好む傾向がみられ、ポピュラーな楽器に加えて民族楽器、あるいはシンセサイザー、シーケンサー、サンプラーなどの電子音楽機材を使用するものが多い。
現在ではDJ、バンド、自宅録音（DTM）などさまざまなスタイルで活動しており、現代の学生の多様化・細分化した好みを広くカバーしている。
